Humboldt Park’s “historical memory”

by Joseph Askins on 11/2/09

On Friday participants of LISC/Chicago’s New Communities Program took Adolfo Carrion Jr, director of the White House Office of Urban Affairs Policy, on a tour of Humboldt Park and Auburn Gresham to showcase the work of the Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation and other community development groups.

Following the tour, Carrion lunched at the La Estancia mixed-use development at 2753 W Division St with representatives of various Humboldt Park community organizations. Much of the discussion centered around jobs and education, but the issue of housing did come up occasionally. In the video above, Jose Lopez, director of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, talks to Carrion about the importance of preserving the “historical memory” of Humboldt Park as economic redevelopment moves forward in the neighborhood.
