A condo building among landmarks in Ukrainian Village

This condo building, and one of two others, on the 900 block of Leavitt and surrounding streets, snuck in just before the block was zoned as a landmark district. Much of the street is made up of brick two- and three-flats and little A-frame workers’ cottages. Yo was wondering why so many of the old homes in Ukrainian Village have remained unchanged for 100 years or more, long before talk arose of landmarking the neighborhood. Locals tell us that one of the main reasons is that many of the homes were populated by Ukrainian and Polish immigrants who didn’t have the money to do additions or “updates.”
