Birds of prey preside over development at busy Uptown intersection

Uptown falcons

Who needs gargoyles when you’ve got these birds watching over your intersection? Meet the peregrine falcons who have made the gentrifying corner of Broadway and Lawrence, in Uptown, their home.

They can be seen hanging out on the fire escapes of the Uptown Theatre, feeding atop the Broadway Bank Building and sunning themselves on Montrose Beach. Peregrine falcons were in danger of extinction not long ago, but the natural cliff dwellers have done surprisingly well in the urban landscape. Displacement is a serious issue in Uptown, however, and these new residents have been accused of displacing numerous pigeons, whose less savory parts can be found on sidewalks below their perch on the roof of the Broadway Bank Building. The photos are courtesy of Kanae Hirabayashi.

Joe, one of several offspring born to Zoom and GG, is pictured here in 2005 eating a breakfast of woodcock at Montrose Harbor. More of Kanae’s terrific photos are available online at this Web site.
