Darryl Strawberry play hits a home run in Chicago

sweetestswing.jpgSo it’s Friday afternoon and you want to do something else this weekend other than stuff your gob with Easter chocolate. How about a little strawberry with your chocolate? A little Darryl Strawberry, that is. The champion baseball player is the inspiration for the Rebecca Gilman play, The Sweetest Swing in Baseball, which is being staged by Eclipse Theater Company at Victory Gardens Theater.

This funny, thought-provoking play was directed by Nathaniel Swift, who also happens to be a member of our team here at YoChicago.

The play is about the inner turmoil of an artist who loses the plot and winds up in a locked facility after her latest exhibition tanks. Her health insurance is running low, so to prolong her stay, she takes on the persona of Darryl Strawberry.

We loved it. Compelling acting, great direction. A home run.

The play runs through Easter, and from Thursday through final curtains on April 23.
