Lexington Park condos is site of Al Capone's famous vault

Click for larger imageIrish developer The Chieftan Group is hoping to knock ’em dead with its new 35-story glass condo highrise, which has started sales at 2138 S Indiana Ave, in the South Loop. A former resident of this site, however, used to knock ’em dead in an entirely different way.

A story in today’s Chicago Sun-Times highlights the fact that the land on which the new Lexington Park Condominiums is being built once sat under the Lexington Hotel, former headquarters for Al Capone. Geraldo Rivera made the hotel famous in 1986 when he unveiled Al Capone’s secret vault there on live television, only to reveal…nothing. The new high-rise will contain 297 condos priced from the $230s.
