White Palace contends for 'Chicago's best neighborhood diner' title

Last week we asked you to weigh in on your favorite neighborhood diner. While many of you had convincing positions, Yo bestows its coveted crown to Tim for providing the best argument for the White Palace Grill. This diner opened in 1939 and has been going strong while other businesses in the area have come and gone. As Tim pointed out, the White Palace Grill, 1159 S Canal St, is close to the Loop, the South Loop, UIC, Chinatown and the West Loop, and the establishment attracts an eclectic mix of customers, including artists, truckers, college students, downtown workers and after-hours folk. Occasionally, the diner is home to heated disputes between athletes. We here at Yo like our diners with a colorful past, an assortment of patrons and damn fine eggs, and the White Palace Grill fits the bill.

Hearty cholesterol-laden thanks to NSH for suggesting the Ohio House, at 600 N LaSalle Dr.; WoodlawnChuck for continuing the never-ending Arturo’s vs. Lazo’s debate, and to Melissa for reminding us that it doesn’t have to be the middle of the night to visit the Palace Grill, at 1408 W Madison St.

Additional tidbit of late-night diner trivia: The Hollywood Grill, suggested by Yo’s truly, is the White Palace Grill’s sister restaurant.
