East meets west at Thymbria condos on King Drive

5001 S King DrWe’re always fascinated by the arcane names on vintage buildings, and “Thymbria,” the condo conversion at 5001 S King Dr, especially piqued our interest. The jewel box of a building has the look of an Eastern temple, which was, no doubt, the idea. The name refers to the god Appollo and the ancient Turkish city where he had a house of worship. The alternating blonde and red brick, the striped base, the lacy stonework and the decorative balconies might be a bit much for some, perhaps even silly, but the ostentation also displays craftsmanship and materials you’d have to travel pretty far back in time to find – though obviously, not quite as far as ancient Turkey.

Condos at the 22-unit development have two to four bedrooms and 1,550 to 2,655 square feet. The largest of these are four-bedroom duplexes that face 51st Street. Not everyone wants to feel like she’s coming home to a temple, but for those who like the effect, it’s accentuated by the empty adjacent land (the next best thing to a hilltop) and the landscaping of wide King Drive.
