The outdoor art scene in Lawndale

Yesterday’s travels found me shooting video at a rental high-rise in the South Loop, viewing lofts in University Village, and checking out the outdoor art scene on the streets of Lawndale after a tour of 26th Street shops (video).

My first stop in Lawndale was just east of Kedzie on 27th Street, a must-visit location for graffiti aficionados. If you go, don’t miss the alley just south of 27th.

I also made a brief stop at the corner of W 21st St and S Spaulding Ave, site of the Urban Art Retreat, which has a “mission of non-violence and bringing people together who are different from each other.” It’s a welcoming, popular spot, according to several of the friendly neighbors.

If you want to visit the Urban Art Retreat’s Frieda Kahlo kitchen, pink flamingo bathroom and Gertrude Stein Salon, check in at one of three open houses scheduled this month: April 15 from 2 to 4 pm, April 18 from 5 to 7 pm, and April 28 from 1 to 3 pm. Stop by any time for the outdoor scene.

Stay alert to your surroundings when you visit the side streets of Lawndale.
