Chicago rental service offers golden shower

by Joe Zekas on 6/21/12

What’s there to be said about this Craigslist ad from My Place Apartments, other than that it’s an almost perfect metaphor for what you can expect from this company and other Chicago rental services?

We’ve previously written about the company’s soliciting deadbeats, felons and strippers as clients, and its apparently fraudulent Google reviews. And, we have a convenient do-not-call list of rental services that you really ought to avoid when looking for your next home or apartment.

It truly amazes me that a business with such predatory practices has not been shut down. Their ‘F’ rating from the BBB, their overwhelmingly negative reviews on yelp, and the six (and counting) lawsuits filed against them all point to the same pattern.

They promise people something that is often too good to be true, force them to pay up front & sign a contract, and they refuse to refund their money when they can’t deliver. They point to a clause in the contract that denies any refund if the customer ‘doesn’t cooperate’. If you tell them you want a place in Bucktown and they show you a place in Englewood, then you aren’t cooperating if you choose not to sign the lease in Englewood.

With the number of people renting rather than owning these days, you’d think the consumer protection agencies would be all over this….are they asleep at the wheel?

Thanks to Joe for the entertaining & informative articles.
